Review DVD Behind The Image

The newest "rare" footage montage to hit the streets is the DVD "Elvis - Behind The image" and although it does contain some insights into Presley's personal life, circa 1970, the release if far from what i expected.
The DVD was hyped up for months, stating it contained the hottest new rare footage of Elvis in 1970 form the L.A. Forum in the Fringe outfit in crystal clear front row quality, plus other concerts from the early 70's, and although the footage is there, it is far from the "crystal clear" they say it is. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad for "fan shot" footage, but it is just that, with no color correction done or contrast enhancement, the footage is dark and sometimes grainy, but IT IS ENJOYABLE TO WATCH! Elvis was definitely at his best during this time, and it's nice to take a peek into that era to se how Elvis worked and played.
The interviews are ok, but in my opinion, still superficial, without getting into too much detail, we hear Kathy Westmoreland talk about her first meeting with Elvis and a light go around about her "romance" with him. Sandi Miller talks about her meetings and friendships with Elvis with a few pictures, nothing great here! The most interesting stories are told by John Wilkinson, the king's rhythm guitarist, about how he met the king way back when he was 9 years old, very nice story. On a side note, I met john during a " Greg Miller as Elvis-tribute" concert in 1990 at a club in Las Vegas, and at that time John has recently had a stroke and had not been on stage with Elvis band members since the king's death in '77, and i remember walking toward the back of the stage and John was really crying his eyes out to another band member, i think it was Kathy, and they were hugging each other , talking about how much they missed Elvis. This really touched me, and i then realized how much he cared for Elvis, it is something i will never forget. John then sang "early morning rain". John, you are a sincere loving friend that Elvis was honored to have.
All in all, the "promo trailer" had Sandi Miller "edited to make it sound as if she had some "bombshell" news about what Elvis said when she asked him what "He wanted", but it turned out to be a fizzle, he wanted "peace". I really thought the interviews could have really went into details about who the man was and some funny stories ( only John had actual event stories ) and not such a skim of the top as we get. This DVD is not one you will watch again and again, like so many others.
The concert footage is intermixed with the interviews and later, with music overdub, shown in it's "entirety", but although impossible, the footage looses something without the actual sound, and Ii found myself waiting for it to end. One review of this DVD claimed the footage "rivaled" that of the "That's The Way It Is" footage, all I have to say on that is, look again my friend, I don't think so!
It was nice to see, but with the high price tag of $44 dollars with shipping, it was a little steep for my tastes, and if volume two promises to deliver the same content, i recommend these DVD's for the ardent collector only, for others may come a way with the feeling of..." is that it?" But, that's just my opinion.

also ich habe sie nicht gesehen, aber wenn man sich die bisherigen kritiken durchliest (positive und negative), so kann man schon zu dem ergebis kommen, dass diese dvd nicht so berauschend ist (v.a. für den preis). zieht man mal die interviews und dieses museum zeugs ab, was bleibt dann ? diese konzertaufnahmen ohne ton und die filmschnipsel von elvis in kalifornien. dafür wären mir 50 euro auch zu viel.
es ist vielleicht ganz nett, das ding in seiner sammlung zu haben (der vollständigkeit halber), aber ich befürchte, dass es bei den meisten so aussieht: 1x anschauen, dann ab ins archiv für die nächsten 5 jahre.
warum hat man nicht einfach die concert footage zu einem günstigen preis als bootleg vcd herausgebracht (wie z.B. die cbs tapes oder die pittsburgh sachen) ? die gründe liegen auf der hand: daran verdienen die macher nicht viel. also baut man ein paar interviews rundherum und gibt dem ganzen den anschein einer professionellen dvd.
wer interviews hören/sehen will, der sollte sich lieber die neue "devinitive elvis" box kaufen. da bekommt man für etwas mehr geld gleich 8 dvd's geboten.

wie wäre es, wenn du dir erst mal selber die dvd anschaust bevor du dir ein urteil bildest.
nur weil du diese panikmache von (wahrscheinlich) einer einzigsten person im BTI-forum gelesen hast, machst du mal wieder ne große welle!
warte doch mal ab, und versuch KORREKTE informationen zu verbreiten - nicht immer diesen mist, den du IRGENDWO im internet aufgeschnappt hast...
so geht das bei dir und deinen infos nämlich IMMER!
also ich habe die dvd auch noch nicht gesehen. deshalb werde ich mir ein urteil auch erst NACHHER bilden.
der preis ist hoch, das ist richtig. aber die CBS tapes waren damals ERHEBLICh teurer (die original VHS bänder, nicht eine kopierte VCD!!!).
auch hab ich 85,-dm für die das sinatra special bezahlt.
wenn das material gut ist, dann bin ich auch bereit soviel dafür auszugeben!
was den inhalt betrifft: interviews von kathy westmoreland habe ich noch nicht irgendwo gesehen. bin schon gespannt drauf. ob es sich lohnt was sie zu sagen hat - abwarten!
ach ja.
was die "bootleg" vcd's betrifft: die hat NIEMAND rausgebracht.
die originalen cbs tapes kamen ausschliesslich auf VHS und haben damals knapp 300,-dm gekostet!
die vcd's wurden danach von irgendeinem fan selbst erstellt!
genauso die pittsburgh vcd: alles privat erstellte sachen!
